The Healthy Vegan DVD – Live review tonight from 8pm!

Matt's Kitchen

Matt's Kitchen - Where the Bristol part of the review was happening

Matt and I are not vegans, we eat meat and all sorts of other non-vegan food stuffs, but at the same time we find the whole concept fascinating. So it was with excitement that we opened up our copies of The Healthy Vegan DVD and poured over the recipes.

Loads of the recipes looked really tasty and we started wondering if it really would be that bad to have one meal entirely adhering to the rules of the movement? The only way to find out was by trying!

A few of our friends were also curious, so what better way to do this than to test on the same night and share our thoughts and experiences with everyone else?!

3 diners, 3 courses – Will we survive? Cooking doesn’t get more vegan than this.

How’s it going to work?

Well, all you need to do is follow us on Twitter tonight, from 8pm sharp. We’ll be doing a live review as we cook our food and serve it up to our friends. Feel free to ask us questions and get involved, or if you can’t make it, check back here tomorrow for a full transcript of the night’s fun! UPDATE: Transcript is now available. Scroll up from the bottom pf this post to read it!

To make it easier when Matt Tweets he’ll start his sentence with M: and when I (Carla) tweet I’ll begin with C: . We may even call in some diners to get their views on the food, just to keep you on your toes!

Is that it?

Of course not! If you like the sound of what we’re cooking and would like to try some of the recipes then you’re in luck! Check here for an exciting competition where you can win a copy of the DVD!

See you at 8pm!

Can you post the recipes please, and your suggestions for extra flavour. An hour ahead of you I am retiring before you start your icecream. I have enjoyed your twitter but don’t think I could commmit to being a vegan, one step too far for me.

  2. Win a copy of The Healthy Vegan DVD in our competition!

[...] of you had chance to tune into Twitter and follow along with us. If you didn’t just check the previous post – we’ll be adding a transcript of the Tweets in the next day or [...]

We’ll speak to the people behind the DVD and see if we can publish a few of their recipes – some of them are really good and I’d like to share them!

I think we’ll now sit back and collect our thoughts, and those of our guests, before making a final judgement on what it’s like to be vegan for the night!

I am also very tired. Tweeting, cooking and entertaining is hard work…

Having finally (hopefully!) posted this in the correct place on FFFY, I can now give my review of the Vegan Cook-Off that Matt kindly prepared for us to eat on Wednesday! I am definitely a meat and cheese eater, and had considered taking some chunks of lamb in my pocket to fill up on, but I needn’t have worried! I was well full afterwards!

I loved the olive tapenade with the homemade bread rolls, it was lush. The rolls were lovely, not at all compromised for being vegan, even nicer if anything.

The roasted butternut squash soup with coconut milk was also lovely – it was quite sweet, but that was no problem. It went down very well with more of Matt’s bread rolls. We suggested that if anything could be changed, perhaps the soup could have a bit of a kick to it to compliment the sweetness.

The main course of tofu and roasted vegetables was the only point for me at which the vegan thing compromised the taste – the tofu really lacked in flavour for me, it could definitely have done with some spice – or ideally be replaced with some mexican chicken!!!

At this point we had to take a break as we were so full, so had cups of herbal tea and played rockstar – perfect!

And then the meal was rounded off with the avocado ice-cream, which was probably the most unusual and delicious course. It was perfect for ending on as it had a fresh, clean flavour, almost minty, but this was actually the lemon ingredient. Really good!!

So that was the Vegan Meal experience, and all in all it was very pleasant! Absolutely no need to go home and fill up on meat and cheese!! I would take home and use the recipes for all the courses minus the tofu wraps.

Thanks Matt, sign me up for the next cook-off!
